Soung Liew, PhD

Soung received his Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From March 1988 to July 1993, he was at Bellcore (now Telcordia), New Jersey, where he engaged in Broadband Network Research. He has been a Professor at the Department of Information Engineering, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), since 1993. Soung is currently the Division Head of the Department of Information Engineering and a Co-Director of the Institute of Network Coding at CUHK. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Peking University and Southeast University, China.

 

Soung ’s research interests include wireless networks, Internet of Things, intelligent transport systems, Internet protocols, multimedia communications, and packet switch design. TCP Veno, a version of TCP to improve its performance over wireless networks proposed by Soung's research group, has been incorporated into Linux OS. Soung’s research group pioneered and advanced the development of Physical-layer Network Coding (PNC). The original paper on PNC was selected by Google Scholar as one of the ten “Classic Papers” in the field of Computer Networks and Wireless Communications in 2017.

 

Soung co-founded two technology start-ups in Internet Software and has been serving as a consultant to many companies and industrial organizations, including Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI). He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of ASTRI. Soung is the holder of 12 U.S. patents and a Fellow of IEEE, IET, and HKIE.
